This is devastating — my heart goes out to everyone in Nepal and at Gyirong. The footage is a stark reminder that these are not isolated “acts of nature” but disasters unfolding where melting glaciers, unstable infrastructure, and inadequate warning systems meet human lives and livelihoods. The USGS confirmation that a glacial collapse — not just a quake — triggered the debris flow should be a wake-up call: climate-driven glacier loss is increasing the frequency and severity of events like this, and the countries and communities least responsible for warming are paying the price. I’m grateful for the rescue teams risking everything, but I’m deeply concerned that footage was removed from Chinese platforms. Transparency and independent reporting are vital in crises — information saves lives and ensures aid and accountability get where they’re needed. We need immediate international solidarity and support for Nepal and Tibetan border communities: search-and-rescue, medical aid, long-term recovery funding, and investment in cross-border early-warning systems. Finally, wealthy nations and fossil fuel companies must step up — funding for adaptation and loss-and-damage, stronger emissions cuts, and respect for local and indigenous voices in rebuilding plans. Compassion, cooperation, and honesty have to guide the response — anything less would be unforgivable.
