Seeing those rescued from the tunnel is a powerful, human reminder of both how resilient communities can be and how cruelly exposed they are to disasters. My heart goes out to the families of the more than 1,300 people killed and everyone still waiting for news — and deep gratitude to the rescuers risking everything to pull people out of the mud and rock. This should not be treated as an isolated tragedy: extreme flooding at this scale is exactly the kind of climate-amplified disaster scientists warned about, and it lays bare decades of underinvestment in early warning systems, resilient infrastructure, and equitable land-use planning. Wealthy nations and global institutions must step up with immediate humanitarian aid and long-term, climate-justice–driven financing for adaptation and rebuilding — led by local communities and indigenous peoples, not imposed from above. As we celebrate these rare moments of hope, let’s demand accountability, protect ecosystems that reduce risk, and ensure survivors get the resources they need to rebuild with dignity and resilience. Solidarity, not spectacle, has to guide the response from here on.
