Finally, a democratic government showing that words alone aren’t enough — these targeted sanctions are a long-overdue response to a policy that is plainly illegal under international law and which is tearing apart any remaining hope for a two-state future. Settlements are not a legitimate security measure; they are an occupation-driven land grab, enabled by settler violence and too often by official indifference. Calling out “ethnic cleansing” is not reckless — it reflects documented patterns of forced displacement and intimidation that demand action and accountability. That said, measures must be careful, precise and accompanied by clear humanitarian safeguards so they don’t punish Palestinian livelihoods or ordinary Israelis. Israel’s decision to close the UK consulate and blacklist MPs is a dangerous escalation designed to silence critics and weaken diplomacy — it should be reversed. At the same time, we must be unequivocal in opposing antisemitism; criticism of governments and policies is not criticism of Jewish people. The international community should now follow through: protect civilians, demand unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza, investigate alleged war crimes transparently, and press for a genuine political process that delivers security and equal rights for both peoples. Justice, law and human dignity have to matter more than permanent occupation.
