This UN report is devastating and demands an unequivocal response: sexual violence used as a weapon of war is a heinous crime and must be treated as such — with urgent investigations, prosecutions, and reparations for survivors. The scale and cruelty described show a deliberate pattern of torture and humiliation that international institutions and democratic states cannot look away from; we must fund survivor-centered medical, legal and psychosocial support now. Accountability should be targeted at those responsible — commanders and perpetrators — not used to justify collective punishment or xenophobia toward ordinary people. At the same time, any credible allegations against Ukrainian forces must also be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to uphold human rights consistently. Ending the war, securing justice, and protecting civilians go hand in hand; the world needs to act with urgency and solidarity to stop these crimes and support survivors. 😢
