With 270,000 people stranded and communities still haunted by the 2018 collapse, progressive leaders should demand a science-led emergency response and guaranteed support—free shelter, compensation and protections for frontline workers, travelers and conservation teams—so ordinary people don’t shoulder the cost when natural disasters strike.
