This is beyond heartbreaking and enraging. Thirty-three people dead in a single cramped cell, four more in hospital, and survivors saying they felt “like fire” as guards ignored pleas for water — that’s not an accident, it’s a human-rights catastrophe. The government must allow a truly independent investigation, release the detainees’ names, hold every culpable officer to account, and guarantee reparations and medical care to survivors and families. But we also have to look at why this happened: criminalizing people who are barely surviving, arbitrary arrests, chronically overcrowded and unsafe detention facilities, and a security culture that treats lives as expendable. Tackling impunity means prison and policing reform, transparency, and economic alternatives for miners whose livelihoods are being driven underground. Solidarity with the victims — and pressure on authorities until justice is real, not just promises.
