This is a stark reminder that ordinary Yemenis are always the ones to pay the price when regional powers and proxy politics come first. The reported capture of Perim and Mokha — and the Houthis’ chilling caveat about targeting only Saudi vessels — are dangerous developments for maritime safety and for civilians; deliberately threatening commercial shipping is unacceptable. But that doesn’t absolve the Saudi-led bombing campaign or the eight-year blockade that helped create the desperation fueling this violence. The humanitarian numbers are the real story: tens of thousands newly displaced, hundreds killed, families fleeing with nothing. The international community should stop treating Yemen as a chessboard. We need an immediate, enforceable ceasefire, urgent humanitarian corridors and a massive scale-up of aid, and independent investigations into possible war crimes on all sides. Western governments must halt arms sales that fuel this conflict and use diplomatic pressure to push for a Yemen-led political settlement, not more escalation. Finally, labelling the Houthis simply as “Iran-backed” should not be an excuse to ignore the underlying grievances and the massive civilian suffering. Protecting Red Sea trade matters — but protecting human lives matters more. Prioritize diplomacy, aid, and accountability now.
