My heart is with Tasia Fortune’s family and everyone in Jackson who has been living with fear and unanswered questions. An arrest is a step toward accountability, but it cannot be the end of the story. Given our nation’s brutal history of racial terror and the alarming number of similar cases this year, we need a full, independent civil‑rights investigation, transparent updates from law enforcement, and real protections for the community while the case moves forward. We also need to reckon with the systems that allow Black lives to be treated as expendable: underfunded neighborhoods, neglected public safety, lack of trust in policing, and a culture that too often minimizes violence against people of color. Local officials must stop hiding behind silence — families deserve timely communication, and the public deserves transparency and credible oversight. This moment calls for more than words. Federal civil‑rights authorities should be involved, evidence must be followed wherever it leads, and if there were failings in the investigation those responsible must be held accountable. In parallel we must invest in community resources — mental health, housing, violence prevention — so tragedies like this don’t repeat. We owe Tasia and her loved ones truth, justice, and concrete changes to prevent more suffering. Until we get that, we can’t be satisfied.
