When these fail, advocates often claim it was not implemented “strongly enough.” ## An Inversion of Truth A quote often attributed to Hannah Arendt claims “the death of human empathy” precedes barbarism, but no source supports it, and her writings argued almost the opposite. Arendt contrasted the American Revolution’s institutions and law with the French revolutionaries’ “politics of pity.” Pity is not compassion: it ranks “fortunate” and “unfortunate,” grants the pitier moral authority, and overrides rights. Arendt argued this enabled Robespierre’s Terror. ## The Trojan Horse Empathy can become projection—imposing your values as if they were others’ needs. Adam Smith warned about the “man of system.” Nietzsche described societies so “soft and tender” they side with those who harm them. Orwell noted equality preaching alongside elite privilege. The Victimhood Economy: Why Young People Prefer Socialism Western civilization is increasingly shaped by entitlement and a culture that rewards displays of victimhood. At elite universities, disability claims have risen: 18% of male and 22% of female undergraduates report a disability, and 54% of non-binary students, with higher rates at some wealthy schools than at community colleges. The issue isn’t genuine disability; it’s what happens when accommodations become status and advantage. Extra time, separate housing, and exemptions can turn diagnosis into leverage. When weakness is rewarded, some will learn to perform it. This matters because today’s students become tomorrow’s institutional elites. If grievance produces rewards, the lesson may spread into journalism, government, HR, academia, and business, letting beneficiaries inherit the power to expand the system. Research on victimhood signaling raises uncomfortable questions: people who habitually emphasize victim status, on average, show higher narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy—not to say genuinely suffering people are manipulative, but that systems rewarding victimhood create incentives for manipulators to exploit the category. Rob Henderson describes this as a status game: in elite institutions, grievance can become the currency of virtue signaling. For some, the rational strategy is to manufacture grievance and convert it into status. Nietzsche similarly argued that displays of helplessness can become covert power, while pity can create moral superiority for the caregiver. The danger isn’t compassion; it’s a culture that turns suffering into currency and teaches ambitious people that the easiest route to power is to claim they are powerless.

Leftist “Empathy” Is Actually Narcissism Leftist “empathy” is often narcissism, not real compassion. Over the past decade, Western politics has debated whether empathy is the highest value—yet many policies justified in its name have produced serious unintended consequences: safe-supply programs, lenient bail, mass migration, identity-based social policy, and gender medicine for minors. Robespierre’s compassion for the masses helped justify terror. Pity isn’t compassion: it creates a hierarchy between the person who pities and the person pitied. Once you claim to represent “the oppressed,” you can stop listening to real people. Much progressive “empathy” projects idealized versions of others, erasing cultural differences and treating disagreement as ignorance or prejudice. So “suicidal narcissism” may fit better than “suicidal empathy”: projection, superiority, and power disguised as compassion.

Mass Migration as a Path to Expanding State Power Western governments have incentives for mass migration. Increasingly staffed by progressives, the state wants to expand its authority over social relations and the economy. Wealth redistribution and equitable representation are easier to claim once the state controls the levers. Many see rising living costs as a failure; for those harmed, it makes sense. From the state’s perspective, however, faster arrivals than can be housed, schooled, or treated strain the system. The state then responds with more spending in those areas, exerting economic control. A state failure becomes the pretext for expanding the state. Higher population also enables misleading “per-capita” narratives. If five people live together making $50,000 each, GDP is $250,000. Add five more and cut everyone to $45,000: GDP becomes $450,000—nearly double—despite lower individual income. Competition for rooms, food, and yard space raises prices while people earn less, producing fewer earnings and higher costs. Rob Henderson calls these “luxury consequences.” Mark Wiseman, co-founder of the Century Initiative, backed a goal of 100 million people in Canada by 2100 (~800,000 per year). What happened in 2022–2024 exceeded targets. After disaster, Wiseman “failed upwards,” later joining Prime Minister Mark Carney’s advisory council. If the state directs social and economic life, it must also prevent revolts when planning fails. Fragmenting society into factions and encouraging their differences weakens cooperation—divide and conquer. The state’s interest was never a thriving citizenry, only a growing one.

V létě 1968 odjel osmnáctiletý Ondřej Křivánek z Prahy na několik týdnů do Anglie, aby si procvičil angličtinu. Měl se vrátit na matematicko-fyzikální fakultu (@matfyz). Pak přišla noc z 20. na 21. srpna. Tanky Varšavské smlouvy obsadily Československo. Otec mu před odjezdem řekl jedinou větu: „Jestli přijdou Rusové, nevracej se.“ Zůstal. O téměř šedesát let později, v březnu 2026, stál tentýž muž v Brně při slavnostním otevření nové laboratoře UltraSTEM v Ústavu přístrojové techniky Akademie věd ČR (@Akademie_ved_CR). Přivezl technologii, kterou spoluvytvořil a která teď poprvé stojí v Česku. Křivánek se narodil 1. srpna 1950 v Praze-Bubenči. V osmnácti reprezentoval Československo na Mezinárodní fyzikální olympiádě. Po invazi a nucené emigraci získal stipendium na University of Leeds, vystudoval fyziku s vyznamenáním a pokračoval na Cambridge u Archieho Howieho. Doktorát obhájil v roce 1976. Pak následovala klasická vědecká pouť špičkového vědce: postdoky v Kjótu, Bellových laboratořích a Berkeley. V Berkeley postavil svůj první spektrometr pro elektronovou energetickou ztrátovou spektroskopii. Později v Gatanu vyvinul systémy, které se staly standardem. Klíčový problém elektronové mikroskopie byl starý přes padesát let: sférická aberace. Elektronové čočky nedokázaly zaostřit paprsek dost ostře, aby bylo možné spolehlivě vidět jednotlivé atomy. Mnozí experti tvrdili, že to nejde. Křivánek s Niklasem Dellbym to v Cambridge v roce 1997 dokázali. Vznikl první funkční korektor aberací pro skenovací transmisní elektronový mikroskop. V roce 2000 dodali první komerční verzi do IBM. Rozlišení překročilo hranici jednoho ångströmu. V roce 1997 založili firmu Nion a postupně z ní udělali výrobce celých mikroskopů UltraSTEM. Ty dnes umožňují i vibrační spektroskopii a zobrazování lehkých prvků včetně vodíku bez poškození vzorku. V roce 2020 Křivánek získal Kavliho cenu za nanovědy. Nion později koupil Bruker (@bruker). Křivánek dnes působí jako jeho vědecký poradce a afilovaný profesor na Arizona State University (@ASU). Do Brna přijel v březnu 2026 jako host. Nová laboratoř UltraSTEM je vybavena špičkovým elektronovým mikroskopem Nion, který je prvním přístrojem svého druhu v Česku. Pracuje s nízkými energiemi elektronů a pokročilými metodami, jako je 4D-STEM a ptychografie. Umožňuje zkoumat citlivé materiály i biologické struktury atom po atomu, aniž by je zničil. Mikroskop stál přes 50 milionů korun a laboratoř je otevřená vědcům z celé Evropy. Pro české a evropské výzkumníky to znamená konkrétní posun. Brno už dlouho patří mezi silná centra elektronové mikroskopie. S tímto přístrojem získává nástroj, který dovoluje studovat materiály a biologické vzorky na úrovni, kde dříve hrozilo jejich zničení. To otevírá cestu k přesnějšímu výzkumu nových materiálů, polovodičů, katalyzátorů i biomolekul a posiluje mezinárodní spolupráci. Křivánek na otevření osobně představil historii firmy a technologií, které se staly standardem. Vedle něj seděl nositel Nobelovy ceny Richard Henderson. Příběh se tím uzavřel: chlapec, kterého invaze „uvěznila“ venku, se po téměř šedesáti letech vrátil s know-how, které změnilo obor. Sám zůstal v Americe, ale jeho technologie teď stojí v Brně a slouží dalším generacím. Elektronová mikroskopie není jen o ostrých fotkách. Umožňuje pochopit, proč materiály fungují, jak se chovají defekty v polovodičích, nebo jak vypadají biologické struktury na úrovni, kde rozhoduje jeden atom.
