Prolomili linii na řece Gumista a město Suchumi zcela obklíčili. Po jeho pádu rozpoutali etnické čistky. Počet zavražděných se pouze odhaduje – hovoří se až o 10 000 obětech. Zatímco se svět jen přihlížel, jak tisíce uprchlíků umírají a další desetitisíce mrznou při útěku přes horské průsmyky, Ukrajinci pomáhali. Dne 10. října ukrajinští piloti v hrdinské záchranné misi provedli 291 letů se 17 vrtulníky. Zachránili 7 643 životů a doručili 487 tun humanitární pomoci. Jejich statečnost v nejtemnějším okamžiku moderních gruzínských dějin zůstává navždy zapsána v historii. 🇺🇦 Mimochodem, podobnou odvahu předvedli Ukrajinci i v Jugoslávii, kde ukrajinský mírový kontingent jako jediný kladl odpor v enklávě Žepa – jen 20 km od zmasakrované Srebrenice. Ukrajinský velitel Myroslav Sivak vedl obranu v úplném obklíčení tak dlouho, dokud nevyjednal bezpečný odchod civilistů. Zachránil tak tisíce životů.
