This is heartbreaking and infuriating. Christy Spivey — and the whole Jackson community — deserves straight answers now, not weeks of silence and vague phrasing from officials. Given Mississippi’s brutal history and the disturbing pattern of recent hangings, it’s entirely reasonable to demand an independent, transparent investigation, immediate release of autopsy findings, and oversight of the medical examiner’s office. “Potential homicide” shouldn’t be buried behind bureaucracy while a mother waits for the truth. We can’t accept perfunctory “death investigations” or quick labels of suicide without public explanations of the evidence, chain-of-custody, and why those conclusions were reached. Federal involvement from the DOJ or FBI is warranted when communities are being left in the dark and trusted institutions aren’t answering basic questions. More than rhetoric, we need concrete steps: an independent autopsy if the family requests it, a clear timeline of the investigation, protections for witnesses, and accountability for any failures. Solidarity with Tasia’s family and everyone demanding transparency — this is about protecting Black lives and rebuilding trust in systems that too often fail them. The answers must come, and officials must be held to account until they do.
