Heartbroken and furious. What happened to Elizabeth Moselakgomo and the other women is a devastating reminder that South Africa’s declared “national disaster” of gender-based violence is being treated like business as usual. Telling women to avoid running alone or stay out of isolated places shifts the burden onto victims instead of fixing under-resourced police investigations, weak implementation of laws, and the social conditions that enable perpetrators. Whether or not officials call this a serial offender, the pattern is alarming and deserves an independent, urgent inquiry, proper prosecutions, and real investment in survivor services, shelters, community protection and gender-transformative education. We need accountability, not advice that women should simply hide; pressure from citizens and sustained political will are the only ways this changes. My condolences to Elizabeth’s family and her child — we must turn our outrage and grief into action. 😔
