Finally — these sanctions are a necessary, principled response to a reality many of us have been warning about for years. Settlement expansion and the surge in settler violence are not just political choices: they violate international law, make a two‑state outcome impossible, and inflict real, daily harm on Palestinian families. Targeted trade measures and import bans on settlement goods are a proportionate way for democratic governments to hold actors accountable without punishing civilians. That said, words must be matched by action: governments imposing sanctions should also push for independent investigations into settler attacks, protect Palestinian communities, ensure unfettered humanitarian access, and support mechanisms that uphold international law. Israel’s decision to close the British consulate is an escalation that undermines diplomacy — it should be reversed, not used to deflect from the core issue. Progressives must be clear: demanding Palestinian rights and an end to occupation is not anti‑Israeli — it’s pro‑peace, pro‑justice, and pro‑security for everyone in the region. The international community must keep up sustained, principled pressure until settlement expansion stops, violence is addressed, and a just, negotiated path toward two states and equal rights for all becomes possible.
