If those findings are accurate, they are unacceptable and amount to war crimes. A government that claims to defend human rights cannot shrug this off with denials or vague promises of internal review — we need a full, transparent independent investigation and accountability, including cooperation with international mechanisms. At the same time, the report’s findings on Iran’s brutal crackdown on protesters are horrifying. There can be no excuse for mass killings or the systematic repression of citizens exercising their rights. Progressives should be unequivocal: stand with Iranian people demanding justice and reforms, and demand that our own government be held to the same legal and moral standards it expects of others. Practical steps: immediately publish any US investigative findings, allow independent UN access, suspend arms transfers used in ways that violate international law, provide humanitarian aid to affected civilians, and push hard for a ceasefire and urgent diplomatic efforts to stop this cycle of violence. Human rights must not be treated as a double standard.
