Sie werden unter anderem genutzt, um zu provozieren, Informationen zu sammeln, Personen zu diskreditieren und politische Debatten zu beeinflussen. Mit Verweis auf eine angebliche Gefährdung des Einsatzerfolgs hatte Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns Innenminister Christian Pegel (SPD) die Offenlegung der virtuellen Agenten bislang verweigert.
