AFRICA DAILY REPORT — 23 SEPTEMBER 2026 Major developments reported during the previous 24 hours 1. SOUTH SUDAN — Kiir dissolves transitional government ahead of December election Importance: 10/10 — Critical President Salva Kiir dissolved South Sudan’s transitional government after signing amendments that remove requirements to complete a permanent constitution and census before the long-delayed national election. The opposition has challenged the changes, while the move fundamentally reshapes the political framework ahead of what is intended to be the country’s first national election since independence. Source: Reuters — https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/south-sudans-president-signs-election-law-changes-ahead-december-vote-2026-09-22/ Additional source: Africanews — https://www.africanews.com/2026/09/22/south-sudan-president-dissolves-govt-as-controversy-engulfs-december-poll/ 2. SUDAN — US links Burhan’s UN visa to proposed ceasefire Importance: 9.5/10 — Very High The United States is withholding a visa for Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan ahead of the UN General Assembly, according to Reuters sources, in connection with a US-backed proposal for a 90-day ceasefire that Khartoum has resisted. Sudan has asked the UN to intervene, and its foreign minister is expected to address the General Assembly instead if the dispute is not resolved. Source: Reuters — https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/us-withholding-sudanese-leaders-visa-over-ceasefire-plan-sources-say-2026-09-22/ 3. SUDAN — Currency collapse deepens civilian economic crisis Importance: 9/10 — Very High Sudan’s pound has lost nearly half its value in army-controlled territory since May, trading at around 7,500 pounds to the dollar on the black market versus about 4,100 in May. Reuters links the collapse to the economic fragmentation created by the war, reduced state revenues and wartime spending. The depreciation is driving up the cost of basic goods and worsening hardship for civilians and returning refugees. DR CONGO — Government orders investigation into violence at anti-government protest Importance: 8.5/10 — Very High DR Congo’s justice minister ordered a judicial investigation into violence during the September 15 opposition protest in Kinshasa, including reports of injuries, arrests, property destruction and a death. The demonstration opposed a proposed constitutional change that could allow President Félix Tshisekedi to seek another term. Police used tear gas, while clashes were also reported between opposition demonstrators and pro-government groups. RWANDA / BELGIUM — Diplomatic relations restored after 18-month rupture Importance: 8/10 — High Belgium and Rwanda have resumed diplomatic relations 18 months after breaking ties amid their dispute over the conflict in eastern DR Congo. The restoration is diplomatically significant because Belgium has been a prominent European actor in the Great Lakes region and relations deteriorated sharply over allegations concerning Rwanda’s role in the Congolese conflict. Source: Reuters — https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/belgium-rwanda-resume-diplomatic-relations-after-drc-conflict-dispute-2026-09-22/ 6. LIBYA — Armed group shuts pipeline valve, reducing Sharara oil production Importance: 8/10 — High An unidentified armed group closed a valve on the pipeline connecting Libya’s major Al-Sharara oil field with Zawiya, reducing production. The National Oil Corporation warned that a prolonged shutdown could force it to declare force majeure and could also affect the Zawiya refinery. The disruption again demonstrates the vulnerability of Libya’s oil-dependent economy to armed-group pressure and political fragmentation. MOROCCO — Parliamentary election puts youth participation and social pressures in focus Importance: 7.5/10 — High Nearly 16 million registered voters are eligible to elect Morocco’s 395-member House of Representatives today. Youth disengagement is a major issue: Africanews/AFP reports that only around 4% of registered voters are aged 18–24. Employment, housing, public services and the legacy of the Gen Z-led protests are central themes surrounding the vote. Diallo has lived in exile since 2022. His UFDG party was dissolved in March along with other opposition parties, adding the passport case to wider concerns about political restrictions under President Mamady Doumbouya. DR CONGO — Ebola outbreak remains severe despite signs of progress Importance: 10/10 — Critical The UN says there are encouraging signs in the fight against the Ebola outbreak, but it is still too early to declare that the epidemic has peaked. More than 7,200 confirmed cases and 3,510 deaths have been recorded across seven provinces. Daily infections have declined from around 120 at the mid-August peak to roughly 80, but North Kivu remains particularly alarming, with 555 new cases reported there in the past 21 days. DR CONGO — Protests and clashes over proposed constitutional changes Importance: 9/10 — Very High Police used tear gas and warning shots as opposition protests spread across Kinshasa and other cities against proposed constitutional changes. Opponents fear the changes could open the way for President Félix Tshisekedi to seek a third term. The political confrontation adds another layer of instability while the country simultaneously faces the Ebola epidemic and conflict in the east. SOUTH AFRICA / UNITED STATES — Washington imposes new visa restrictions Importance: 9/10 — Very High U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a new visa-restriction policy targeting certain foreign nationals from South Africa. Washington says the measures concern people linked to uncompensated land seizures, racial discrimination or violence against ethnic minorities. The move marks another deterioration in U.S.–South African relations following disputes over land reform, racial policy and Pretoria's foreign policy. EGYPT / RED SEA — Sisi and Saudi crown prince focus on security of strategic shipping routes Importance: 9/10 — Very High Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stressed the need to protect freedom and security of navigation through the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb. The talks come amid escalating Houthi military activity and growing threats to one of the world's most important maritime corridors. Egypt has a particularly strong economic interest because disruption of Red Sea traffic directly affects Suez Canal revenues. Source: Reuters, 15 Sep 2026 https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/egypts-sisi-saudi-crown-prince-stress-need-security-red-sea-navigation-2026-09-15/ 5. DJIBOUTI — Yemen conflict drives growing refugee pressure across the Red Sea Importance: 8/10 — High Escalating fighting in Yemen is pushing more civilians toward Djibouti. More than 2,000 Yemenis are already there, while nearly 94,000 people have been displaced inside Yemen. A fuel shortage is temporarily slowing sea crossings, but the International Organization for Migration expects more people to attempt the journey once fuel becomes available. Djibouti's capacity to absorb additional arrivals could come under increasing pressure. SOUTH AFRICA — Seven women's deaths trigger major investigation and national concern Importance: 8/10 — High South African police are investigating the deaths of seven women whose bodies have been discovered over the past two months in and around Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg. Authorities have not yet established whether the killings are linked to a single perpetrator. President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised a thorough investigation. The case is intensifying public concern over South Africa's exceptionally high levels of violent crime and gender-based violence. Source: Reuters, 15 Sep 2026 https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/south-african-police-probe-killings-seven-women-ramaphosa-vows-action-2026-09-15/ 7. NIGERIA — Industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory dismantled Importance: 7/10 — High Nigeria's anti-drug agency dismantled an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Ebonyi State and arrested a Mexican national while he was attempting to leave the country. Authorities say the operation followed a months-long investigation into a wider criminal network. The case is significant because West and Central Africa are increasingly being used not only as drug-transit corridors but also as production hubs for synthetic narcotics. SOUTH AFRICA — Rand weakens as oil-price surge increases inflation pressure Importance: 7/10 — High The South African rand weakened against the U.S. dollar as high global energy prices, a stronger dollar and weaker precious-metals prices increased concerns about inflation and South Africa's import bill. As a major oil importer, South Africa is particularly exposed to the current energy shock, which could feed through into fuel prices, transport costs and monetary-policy decisions. Source: Reuters, 15 Sep 2026 https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/south-african-rand-slides-oil-price-surge-pressures-emerging-market-currencies-2026-09-15/ 9. KENYA — Nairobi awarded 2029 World Athletics Championships in historic African first Importance: 6/10 — Significant Nairobi will host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, making Kenya the first African country to stage the event. The championships will take place at Kasarani Stadium. Would you inhabit a 3D-printed house erected in eight days? An affordable / mould-resistant / fire-resistant / seismic-resistant / climate-disaster-resilient house. SOURCE: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1420242892872158 A 3D-printed house that genuinely resolves the global housing crisis!!! What you are viewing in the video is no mere exhibition prototype. It is House Zero — the first luxury 3D-printed residence realised in Austin, Texas, by the American firm ICON in collaboration with the practice Lake|Flato Architects. Two hundred square metres, three bedrooms, a drawing room with exposed beams, a designer kitchen, and an independent casita in the garden. Its iconic undulating walls were extruded in a mere eight to ten days. A project so revolutionary as to have been included in TIME's list of the Best Inventions of 2022. But what does it truly signify to dwell in a 3D-printed house? WHAT A 3D-PRINTED HOUSE IS: No bricks or formwork are employed. An enormous robotic arm — ICON's Vulcan system — deposits, layer upon layer, a proprietary special concrete, Lavacrete, a material engineered to be eminently resistant, insulating, and printable. The entire process is governed by software that adjusts the formula every fifteen minutes according to weather conditions. Plaster and structure become one and the same. WHY IT IS THE FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION: ALL THE ADVANTAGES 1. Record times: The walls of House Zero were completed in eight days, as opposed to the months required by a traditional building site. The site operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and never ceases for lack of labour. 2. Less waste and greater sustainability: Additive printing uses only the material that is necessary. Site waste and emissions from material transport are reduced to nigh on zero. Moreover, Lavacrete is designed for superior energy efficiency. 3. Lower costs (potentially): Fewer workmen on site, fewer deaths and injuries at work, less time, fewer errors. According to ICON, the system can substantially curtail construction costs and render housing more accessible. 4. Total architectural liberty: The curves, the fluted walls, the integrated niches you see in the video would be exorbitantly expensive or impossible by traditional methods. With 3D printing, form truly follows function. 5. Resilience and insulation: The walls in printed reinforced concrete are more resistant to fire, water, mould, and extreme atmospheric agents, typical of Texas. The thermal inertia of the material guarantees superior insulation. 6. A solution to the housing crisis: It is the technology that ICON is already employing to build entire neighbourhoods of one hundred houses in Texas and for social housing projects in Mexico. The question now is this: having seen it within, would you live in it?
