❗ Χθες, πηγαίνοντας στην Έκθεση Βιβλίου στο Πεδίον του Άρεως, μου συνέβη κάτι που θα μπορούσε να είχε εξελιχθεί πολύ άσχημα. 🚇 Στον σταθμό του ηλεκτρικού στα Άνω Πατήσια, ανεβαίνοντας με τις κυλιόμενες σκάλες, έχασα την ισορροπία μου και έπεσα ανάσκελα. Δεν μπορούσα να σηκωθώ. Ήταν αδύνατον. Κι έτσι οι κυλιόμενες σκάλες συνέχισαν να ανεβαίνουν κι εγώ έμεινα ξαπλωμένος μέχρι να φτάσω επάνω. ❤️ Και τότε συνέβη κάτι που θέλω να θυμάμαι περισσότερο από την ίδια την πτώση. Ακριβώς πίσω μου βρισκόταν μια νεαρή κοπέλα. Χωρίς να με γνωρίζει, χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη, έσκυψε και σε όλη τη διαδρομή κρατούσε και προστάτευε το κεφάλι μου, μέχρι να φτάσουμε επάνω. 🙏 Και όταν φτάσαμε, δύο νέα παιδιά που βρίσκονταν εκεί έτρεξαν αμέσως κοντά μου. Με βοήθησαν να σηκωθώ, με κράτησαν και με ρώτησαν με πραγματικό ενδιαφέρον: «Είστε καλά, κύριε;» Ευτυχώς, τελικά δεν χτύπησα. ❤️ Όμως έφυγα από εκεί έχοντας κερδίσει κάτι άλλο. Την υπενθύμιση ότι μέσα στην καθημερινότητα, ανάμεσα σε ανθρώπους που δεν γνωρίζονται μεταξύ τους και πιθανότατα δεν θα ξανασυναντηθούν ποτέ, υπάρχει ακόμη η ανθρωπιά. Δεν έμαθα τα ονόματά τους. Εκείνοι δεν ήξεραν το δικό μου. Για λίγα λεπτά, όμως, αυτό δεν είχε καμία σημασία. 🙏 Στην κοπέλα που προστάτευε το κεφάλι μου σε όλη εκείνη τη δύσκολη διαδρομή και στα δύο παιδιά που με βοήθησαν να σταθώ ξανά όρθιος, ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ. ❗ Yesterday, on my way to the Book Fair at Pedion tou Areos in Athens, something happened to me that could have ended very badly. 🚇 At Ano Patissia station, while going up the escalator, I lost my balance and fell backwards. I couldn’t get up. The escalator kept moving, carrying me all the way to the top while I remained lying down. ❤️ But what I want to remember most is not the fall. A young woman happened to be standing right behind me. She didn’t know me, yet without hesitation she bent down and protected my head throughout the entire ride until we reached the top. 🙏 When we finally got there, two young people immediately came over. They helped me get back on my feet, supported me and genuinely asked: “Are you all right, sir?” Fortunately, I wasn’t injured. ❤️ But I walked away with something else: a reminder that humanity is still there — among complete strangers who may never see one another again. I never learned their names. They didn’t know mine. The Psychology Behind Political Violence Political life carries an appetite for violence beneath the surface. A shooter leaves a manifesto; supporters celebrate; online strangers justify killing over insults, misgendering, and fantasies of execution. We’re told these are separate phenomena—different ideologies, grievances, causes—but they’re deeply connected. The murderer, the celebrant, and the online fantasist share one conviction: blood will build a better world. We often assume ideology comes first, violence second—radicalization infecting an otherwise ordinary person. But corrupted people may seek ideologies that rationalize what they already want to believe. Feeling comes first; philosophy follows. Nietzsche called this *ressentiment*: not ordinary anger, but enduring resentment rooted in surrendered agency and perpetual victimhood. Ressentiment is creative: it turns grievance into virtue and revenge into justice. That’s why movements can sound humanitarian while obsessing over enemies. They promise liberation but focus on who must be eliminated; they call violence self-defense while celebrating destruction. Notice the imbalance: energy goes to identifying who deserves punishment, not to explaining how their better society would work. This is the difference between genuine grievance and pathological ressentiment. Genuine grievance seeks repair; ressentiment seeks subtraction. Its “solutions” are fantasies of punishment—heads cut off, privilege liquidated, wrong pronouns punished. These aren’t coherent doctrines of stability; they’re rationalizations for resentment. Ressentiment also despises self-improvement because it requires admitting agency. Its worldview depends on locating suffering outside oneself. The deepest enemy of these movements, then, is not any specific ideology. It is agency itself.

Multiculturalism can drift toward authoritarianism: the state expands to manage conflicts, neutrality becomes impossible without common standards, and unequal treatment follows. Britain illustrates the danger, with thousands of arrests in 2023 under communications laws for alleged offensive messages and long sentences for single posts. Meanwhile, authorities have shown hesitation toward major crimes involving protected communities, often citing fears of racism and community harm—creating a double standard. Canada also has examples, such as the Gladue principles, which require sentencing judges to consider the circumstances of Indigenous offenders, letting group identity influence state treatment. The multicultural liberal state was sold as open, tolerant, and equal—but if groups won’t “melt,” or fundamentally oppose one another, the result is increasingly unequal laws, more surveillance, and less liberty. Multiculturalism and liberalism are incompatible: without shared cultural standards, a society will be governed from above through laws, courts, and coercion.
