Didier Maïsto accused Emmanuel Macron of having confined a generation for months, closed high schools, and isolated teenagers, while he was going to the theater with his wife. He believed that these measures had contributed to the distress of young people and criticized the fact that their anger was treated as a public order issue. To support his statements, Maïsto cited figures he attributed to Public Health France and the National Suicide Observatory: nearly one in five high school students would have shown a significant risk of depression and suicidal thoughts in the past year, and 15% would have already attempted suicide. He also indicated that hospitalizations for self-inflicted injuries among young women aged 15 to 19 had reached 516 per 100,000 in 2023, an increase of nearly 50% since 2017, while the youth suicide rate is said to have increased by 40% between 2020 and 2022. According to him, more than half of students reported depressive symptoms during the second lockdown. Maïsto added that the deterioration of young people's mental health had started in the mid-2010s and that the lockdowns had accelerated it. He also mentioned isolation, academic pressure, Parcoursup, social media, and precarity, estimating that girls were particularly affected. He concluded that young people did not need to be targeted by defense ball launchers. #SantéMentaleJeunes #SantéMentale #Jeunesse #Dépression (translated)
