Nederland was een gasland. In 2016 kwam 56% van ons gasaanbod uit eigen bodem, in 2024 nog 22%. De eigen winning zakte van 492 naar 93 TWh. Het verandert fundamenteel wie er aan onze energie verdient, en wie ervoor betaalt. Groningen moest dicht. Wat daarna kwam, was wel een keuze. De velden op de Noordzee lieten we uitdoven, en het vervangende gas halen we per tanker van de andere kant van de oceaan. Het gasverbruik daalde wel, van zo'n 42 miljard kuub in 2019 naar ongeveer 30 miljard nu. Maar voor een belangrijk deel doordat fabrieken minder gingen produceren toen gas onbetaalbaar werd. Dat is economische krimp. Voor de industrie betekent dit dat we voor Amerikaans LNG de Europese prijs betalen. In september lag die 7 tot 10 keer boven wat een Amerikaanse fabriek betaalt. Daar komt de CO2-prijs uit het Europese emissiehandelssysteem nog bovenop en vanaf 1-2027 ETS-2. Een chemiefabriek in Texas heeft met geen van beide te maken. Energie intensieve bedrijven kunnen daar niet tegenop. Ze vertrekken niet met veel lawaai, ze investeren hier gewoon niet meer. De nieuwe fabriek komt in de VS of in Azië, en straks importeren we het product in plaats van het gas. Voor de staat: de aardgasbaten waren in 2022 nog €15,7 miljard. Dat geld komt niet meer terug. Tot 2018 voerde Nederland meer gas uit dan in. Nu sturen we het geld naar Noorwegen en de VS, en betalen we er de hoofdprijs voor. Voor burgers: een kuub gas kost rond de €1,40, en ruim de helft daarvan is energiebelasting en btw. Die belasting is bewust verhoogd om mensen van het gas af te krijgen. Maar wie huurt of in een slecht geïsoleerd huis woont, kan niet zomaar van het gas af. Die betaalt gewoon meer. Dat is het wensdenken van de GreenDeal: het doel ligt vast, en de weg ernaartoe wordt aangenomen. Gas duurder maken werkt alleen als er een betaalbaar alternatief klaarstaat, en dat stond er niet. Wat we kregen, was vooral minder eigen gas, minder industrie en hogere rekeningen. De klimaatkerk noemt dat vooruitgang, ik vind dit #drang en #dwang Energiezekerheid, concurrentiekracht en betaalbaarheid staan niet tegenover klimaatbeleid. Ze zijn er de voorwaarde voor. Beleid dat die drie opoffert, levert geen schonere wereld op, maar een armer Nederland dat zijn uitstoot heeft geëxporteerd. COA gaat nóg een jaar langer door met opvang in Fletcher Hotel Wolfheze, tegen de wil van de gemeente in. Het was een tijdelijke opvang voor een half jaar.
