Pred Dončićem sem vsakič na meji pri vstopu razlagal, da “Slovenia is not Slovakia”, da smo “an EU member” in da “we don’t need a visa to enter the US”. Včeraj me je officer vprašal, če sem basketball fan, in potem sva imela debato o Dončić trade in o tem, da so bili Lakersi v Ljubljani. Pa še zanimal ga je, če živim blizu hotela, kjer so bili. Arhimed je bil na svoji tablici, ko ga je ubil rimski vojak. Zveni naravno? Ne ravno. In vendar lahko prav tam končamo, če preteklost dovolj »posodobimo«. Skoraj vsaka kultura pozna posodobljene izdaje starejših avtorjev, skupaj z razpravami o pravopisu, besedišču, uredniških opombah in prilagajanju sodobnemu bralcu. Neki starinar mi je nekoč rekel, da »patina časa daje vrednost« in lahko pomeni razliko med izvirnikom in poceni kopijo. Odprem »Nedeljske eseje« Constantina Noice, pridem do založnikovega predgovora v izdaji Humanitas iz leta 1992 in izvem, da je bil »pravopis posodobljen«. Branje Noice bi lahko bilo sprehod skozi trideseta in štirideseta leta 20. stoletja. Namesto tega se sprehajamo z modernimi očali, udobno nameščeni v Uberju, brez skrbi, da bi se izgubili — torej da ne bi razumeli besed tistega časa, ki bi jih lahko preprosto »prevedli« v opombah pod črto. Kaj pa, če bi vzeli tudi časopise iz tistega obdobja in jih »posodobili«? Morda bi lahko naredili še rebranding takratnih oglasov, da našim nevronom ne bi bilo treba preveč delati, kot da bi bili v escape roomu. Zakaj bi se ustavili tukaj? Posodobili bi lahko tudi učbenike zgodovine in zapisali, da je Arhimeda iz Sirakuz ubil rimski vojak, medtem ko je na svoji tablici reševal matematiko. Osnovna ideja ostane ista, kajne? Izgine samo obdobje. In še nekaj: zakaj matematiki ne »posodobijo« Pitagore? Lahko spremenijo zapis. Dokaz lahko razložijo drugače. Risbo lahko celo izdelajo na spletu z animacijo, ki nastaja pred očmi učencev. Toda Pitagorov izrek ostane Pitagorov izrek. Ko torej beremo starejšega avtorja, zakaj ne bi ohranili tudi jezika njegovega časa — sodobne razlage pa dali v opombe?
