The author wrote that the concept of victory should mean readiness for immediate action, including air defense, ammunition, and efficient logistics. He added that NATO's eastern flank needed resilient infrastructure and joint exercises for the military, police, and other services. He also stated that Russia should know that its aggression would end in failure. #NATO #obrona #bezpieczeństwo #PL #NATO #RU (translated)

"Translated from the Future" - Capsule event with Xia Jia, Milena Adam, and Wolfgang Tress moderated by Felix Meyer zu Venne October 14, 2026 | 8:00–9:00 PM | Otherland (Bergmannstraße 25, 10961 Berlin) Let us imagine we could bridge decades in cryosleep until incurable diseases are defeated. But what does it feel like to awaken in a world where our friends and relatives are no longer there? And what does a world look like where a pandemic has resulted in only children living there? On the third evening of "Translated from the Future," the question arises of how to translate feelings that one does not (yet) know. Time: 8 PM Location: Otherland Bookstore, Bergmannstraße 25 10961 Berlin Admission: Free - please register by emailing [email protected] Language: English Xia Jia writes science fiction, engages academically with the genre, and translates. She teaches Chinese literature at Jiaotong University in Xi’an as a professor. Her style is described as "Porridge Science Fiction" because her stories are sprinkled with numerous elements atypical of the genre, such as references to myths. Her short stories "In the Clouds," "Night Walk of the Dragon Horse," and "Tongtong’s Summer" have been published in capsule publications. Milena Adam is a translator and interpreter from French and English. For Matthes & Seitz Berlin, she has translated works by Sandra Newman, Eileen Myles, Ken Kesey, Alain Damasio, and Cal Flyn, among others. She lives in Berlin. Lucie Rico and Milena Adam were shortlisted for the PRIX Premiere #5 (2024/25). Felix Meyer zu Venne is a sinologist, translator, and Chinese teacher. Since 2018, he has been part of the editorial team of the science fiction magazine "Kapsel"; since 2021, he has been a co-editor of the magazine. He has translated works by Jia Pingwa, Xia Jia, Jiang Bo, Baoshu, Regina Kanyu Wang, and Chi Hui into German. Wolfgang Tress is a co-owner of the Otherland Bookstore in Berlin, which has specialized in science fiction, fantasy, horror, and role-playing games in German and English for over 25 years. His favorite quote is from Ursula K. Le Guin's essay "The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction": "The stories we tell ourselves create the reality in which we live." (translated)

The author suggested that a future theory of evolution might recognize humans as one of many possible forms of intelligence, and argued that legal, social and value systems should be adjusted accordingly.

Leszek Kołakowski: Marxism, Historical Truth, and the Dangers of Political Absolutism Kołakowski was a major intellectual figure because he combined serious philosophical training, firsthand experience of communism, and the courage to revise his own convictions. He was not an anti-communist attacking Marxism from outside. He had once believed in Marxism and understood its appeal from within. After the 1956 thaw, he initially tried to recover a more humane Marxism based on freedom, dignity, and opposition to bureaucratic tyranny. His later criticism therefore carried unusual weight: it came from someone who had taken the doctrine seriously and tried to save it. His importance also lies in the distinctions he made. He did not simply equate Marx, Lenin, Stalin, and every form of socialism. In *Main Currents of Marxism*, he traced the development of Marxist ideas and examined how concepts such as historical necessity, class conflict, ideological truth, and the revolutionary party could encourage political intolerance. His central warning was that a movement claiming privileged access to historical truth may eventually treat disagreement not as legitimate opinion but as error, reaction, or treason. Once one party claims to represent history or humanity, it can justify controlling the press, courts, universities, civil society, and private life. This helps explain why communist regimes so often produced censorship, one-party rule, political policing, and coercive social transformation. My evaluation is that Kołakowski identified a genuine danger in Marxist political theory: the tendency to subordinate individual freedom and institutional pluralism to an allegedly necessary historical goal. His critique also makes the phrase “that was not real Marxism” inadequate on its own. Kołakowski’s greatest achievement was therefore not proving that “Marxism equals terror.” It was showing why a doctrine promising total liberation can become dangerous when it also claims total knowledge and gives one political organization the authority to impose that promise.

“Socialism Was Good in Theory” That assumes socialism’s theory was never seriously challenged. It was—long before the Soviet Union, Lenin, or any national-scale experiment. Five thinkers attacked its foundations from different directions. Tocqueville: Equality Can Become Servitude In 1848, Alexis de Tocqueville distinguished democracy from socialism. Both pursued equality, but democracy sought it while preserving individual freedom. Socialism risked achieving equality by expanding state power. Equality, he warned, is not automatically liberty. Bastiat: Redistribution Can Become Plunder In 1850, Frédéric Bastiat examined what happens when the state takes from some to give to others in the name of justice. He called this “legal plunder.” His concern was that politics could become a permanent struggle to control redistribution. Nietzsche: Equality Can Become Resentment Nietzsche attacked socialism psychologically. He saw egalitarianism as potentially rooted in resentment toward exceptional individuals, ambition, strength, and hierarchy. The danger was a culture that treated excellence as morally suspect—not lifting people upward, but bringing the exceptional downward. Böhm-Bawerk: Challenge the Economics In 1896, Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk attacked Marx’s economic theory, arguing that Marx’s labor theory of value could not adequately explain the relationship between labor values and actual prices. He challenged socialism’s claim to a scientific economic foundation. Mises: The Calculation Problem In 1920, Ludwig von Mises asked a devastating question: even if socialism is morally desirable, how would planners know what to produce? The sequence is clear: Tocqueville challenged the political premise. Bastiat challenged redistribution. Nietzsche challenged egalitarian psychology. Böhm-Bawerk challenged Marxian economics. Mises challenged central planning. All of them preceded the Soviet experiment. So “socialism was good in theory, but bad in practice” is not an argument. It is a historical claim that requires explaining why these objections were wrong.

Modern humanity has existed for roughly 300,000 years. By comparison, socialism in the sense associated with Henri de Saint-Simon emerged only around the 1820s, approximately 200 years ago. This means that the period during which humanity has had access to this particular political and social idea represents only a very small fraction of our history. The calculation is: 200 300,000 × 100 ≈ 0.067 % 300,000 200 ×100≈0.067% Thus, humanity has lived during the Saint-Simonian era of socialism for approximately 0.07% of the history of Homo sapiens. Put another way, this amounts to roughly one year out of every 1,500 years of human existence. If we use the broader human lineage as the reference point—stretching back approximately 6–7 million years—the proportion becomes even smaller, at around 0.003%. These figures highlight how recently socialism emerged relative to the immense span of human evolution. For the overwhelming majority of human history, people lived without socialism as a named or systematically developed political theory.
