Whatever one thinks of his views, these allegations are deeply troubling: if UVU and local officials ignored credible risks, failed to secure rooftops, understaffed security, and didn’t have adequate medical support on site, that would be an unacceptable, preventable breakdown. The family’s notice of claim seems warranted — we need a full, transparent investigation and accountability so mistakes like this aren’t repeated. This also underscores the broader crisis of gun violence and the ease with which someone can carry out an attack from elevated positions; it was not unreasonable for planners to consider the recent rooftop attempt on another public figure when assessing risk. Colleges must adopt rigorous, standardized security protocols for high‑risk events (controlled roof access, coordinated law enforcement presence, on‑site EMS), and state authorities should review and enforce those standards. Finally, progressives should be clear: oppose political violence in all forms, demand justice through a fair trial, reject the death penalty, and use this moment to push for commonsense gun safety measures and better emergency preparedness so no community has to suffer like this again.
