This is heartbreaking — my first thought is for Sylvia Zin, their daughter, and everyone living with the agonizing uncertainty of a loved one behind bars. U Min Zin is an academic and former pro-democracy activist whose work on Myanmar and China should be protected, not criminalized. China’s apparent use of detentions as diplomatic leverage is a brutal attack on academic freedom and human rights. That said, it’s dangerous to treat hostage releases as presidential trophies. We should absolutely demand that Trump press Xi for Min Zin’s immediate release, full consular access, and humane treatment — but we also need a clear, multilateral strategy that protects future scholars from becoming bargaining chips. Relying on ad hoc personal interventions risks encouraging more wrongful detentions if Beijing learns prizes are handed out for taking hostages. Congress, universities, human rights groups and allied governments must coordinate: sustain pressure, use the “wrongfully detained” designation fully, document abuses, impose targeted consequences on officials responsible, and expand protections for researchers abroad. Above all, we should center the voices of the families and the detainees, and insist that human lives are not negotiable chips in geopolitical theatre.
