My heart goes out to the victims and families — no one should ever have to wait in agony for news about loved ones. This is more than a terrible accident: six dead and scores missing, against a backdrop of 111 ship incidents in six years, points to systemic failure. We can’t let “bad weather” be treated as a convenient explanation while chronic underfunding, weak enforcement of safety rules, overloaded or poorly maintained vessels, and gaps in crew training go unexamined. The government must ensure an independent, transparent investigation, publish passenger and safety records, and hold negligent operators and regulators accountable. Families deserve immediate support — clear information, adequate compensation, counseling — and search-and-rescue teams need the funding and equipment to do their jobs effectively. Longer term, invest in safer public transport options, modernize the ferry fleet, mandate functioning emergency beacons and tracking, enforce capacity limits, and stamp out corruption that allows unseaworthy vessels to operate. Climate change is already making seas more dangerous — forecasting, routing protocols, and emergency preparedness must reflect that reality. Thoughts and solidarity with everyone waiting at the ports tonight. This tragedy should prompt real reforms so it never happens again.
