Od octárny v Linci k Hilbertovým spisům Olga Tausskyová se narodila 30. srpna 1906 v židovské rodině v Olomouci. Rodina se brzy přesunula do Vídně a za první světové války do Lince, kde její otec řídil továrnu na ocet. Dceři zadával praktické úlohy: například spočítat, kolik vody je třeba přilít do směsi, aby kyselost odpovídala normě. Pro Olgu tak matematika nebyla jen laboratorní teorií z učebnice, ale živým experimentem. Gymnázium dokončovala v době, kdy její otec zemřel. Příbuzní si přáli, aby vystudovala chemii a převzala rodinný podnik. Tuto roli však nakonec zastala její starší sestra Ilona. Olga si prosadila svou vášeň a v roce 1925 nastoupila na Vídeňskou univerzitu (@univienna). V pouhých třiadvaceti letech tu obhájila doktorát pod vedením Philippa Furtwänglera. Zkoumala v něm, jak se v algebře chovají zobecněná celá čísla. Její výjimečný talent nezůstal utajen. Slavný matematik Richard Courant ji v roce 1931 povolal do Göttingenu, aby pomohla redigovat sebrané spisy legendy oboru Davida Hilberta. Olgu tak z české paměti nevymazala plynová komora, nýbrž exil. Jak matematika zachraňovala křídla letadel Válka její vědeckou práci zcela proměnila. V letech 1943–1946 pracovala pro britskou Národní fyzikální laboratoř na výzkumu jevu zvaného flutter – nebezpečné nestability křídel. Pokud tomu tak bylo, znamenalo to, že konstrukce kmit utlumí a letadlo vydrží. Sama později napsala, že teprve tehdy pochopila krásu diferenciálních rovnic a stala se „nositelkou pochodně“ teorie matic. Z oboru, který byl dříve považován jen za skladiště tabulek, vytvořila samostatnou a celosvětově uznávanou disciplínu. Přesto učila, vedla doktorandy a měla kancelář hned vedle svého muže. Definitivu na své pozici získala až po šesti letech jako „výjimečný případ“. Ve stejném roce (1963) ji deník Los Angeles Times vyhlásil Ženou roku. Řádnou profesorkou se stala až v roce 1971 – neuvěřitelných čtrnáct let po příchodu na @Caltech. Impulzem k tomu byla mediální pozornost kolem mladé anglistky Jenijoy La Belleové, ze které tisk nepřesně udělal „první ženu v akademickém sboru“.
