The Return to Feudalism in 21st Century Garb A simple observer's viewpoint, with no claim to hold any absolute truth. The Veneer Cracks There is something strangely archaic about the world unfolding before our eyes, despite its satellites, artificial intelligence, and promises of infinite progress. Here and there, we witness heads of state behaving like feudal lords of another age, patiently nibbling away at the neighboring territory, redrawing borders through force rather than law, as if governing a nation mattered less than expanding one's fiefdom. No names need be mentioned here: current events provide plenty of illustration, and each reader will recognize, according to their own geography and moment of reading, the faces that embody this observation. But this return to the archaic is not confined to grand geopolitical stages. It also permeates the most ordinary daily life—that of social media, where anyone can pour out venom against another without filter, without form, and often without the slightest argument. The verbal jousting of yesteryear, with its codes, its rhetoric, its tacit limits, has given way to raw invective, snap judgment, instant condemnation. We no longer debate: we execute, verbally—and sometimes it doesn't stop at words. The Vanished Inhibition What strikes one, in this dual observation—macro-political and micro-social—is the lifting of an inhibition we thought firmly anchored. Centuries of cultural construction, education, philosophy, sometimes religion, had patiently shaped mechanisms of restraint: politeness as social ritual, argumentation as a mode of resolving disagreement, respect for one's opponent as the very foundation of democratic debate. This civilizational veneer, however fragile it always was, seemed to hold. Today it is cracking, and the question—which for me remains a simple hypothesis, not a certainty—is why. A convenient explanation would blame social media: anonymity, the distance of the screen, the instantaneousness of publication would favor verbal acting-out without the usual mediation of reflection. This is probably true, but likely insufficient. For technology here is only an accelerant, an amplifier—not necessarily a root cause. A Poorly Formatted Neocortex? The more unsettling hypothesis—and I frame it explicitly as hypothesis, not scientifically established fact—is that of a failure in the formation of moral judgment and tolerance toward otherness. The human brain possesses the neural structures enabling empathy, the distancing of impulsive reaction, the acceptance of difference—but these capacities are not innate in their full exercise: they must be built, educated, cultivated, like a muscle that needs patient training from childhood onward. If this education in otherness, nuance, and tolerance of disagreement erodes—for multiple and undoubtedly complex reasons that are not mine to settle here—then older reflexes resurface: instinctive distrust of the stranger outside the clan, the law of the strongest, the logic of territorial or symbolic predation. The other ceases to be a possible interlocutor and becomes once again a potential threat, unless they belong to my tribe, my clan, my party, my digital bubble. Two Scales, One Logic What is striking, in this deliberately provocative reading, is the structural similarity between these two scales. The leader who invades a neighbor in the name of a rediscovered greatness or a reinvented historical right, and the anonymous internet user who insults a stranger in the name of an unnegotiable conviction, may obey the same underlying grammar: that of territory to defend, clan to protect, the other to subdue or exclude rather than understand. The form has changed—satellites instead of horses, tweets instead of heralds—but the substance, in this reading that remains mine alone and commits no one else, seems strangely identical to that of feudal rivalries: the absence of a recognized third party, of an accepted common rule, of a respected arbitrating authority. Everyone becomes judge and party, lord of their own digital or territorial fiefdom. A Civilization on a Knife's Edge Norbert Elias, in his Civilizing Process, showed how Western societies had historically built, with remarkable slowness, an increasing control over impulses and direct violence, in favor of more sublimated forms of social regulation. What we may be observing today—and I stress again the conditional—is a form of regression in this process, or at least a fragilization of the veneer it had patiently laid down. Should we see this as an effect of great technological accelerations, which shake up our cognitive rhythms without leaving education time to adapt? A deeper crisis of the institutions tasked with transmitting these values of tolerance—school, family, religion, the rule of law? Or simply a cyclical movement of human history, where phases of policed civilization alternate with darker backlashes? I have no certain answer, and I would be wary of anyone claiming to hold one. In Conclusion, a Shared Concern This text is only a viewpoint, necessarily partial and subjective, on a world that sometimes seems to replay ancient logics in new clothing. Perhaps I am wrong to perceive a continuity between the feudal lord and the contemporary dictator, between the anonymous online insult and the absence of education in nuance. Perhaps these phenomena are unrelated, or too complex to be thus summarized. But if this reading, even partially, hits the mark, then the question that arises is less one of technological regulation—though necessary—than the far more arduous question of how to rebuild, generation after generation, this capacity to accept the other in their difference, to debate without destroying, to coexist without necessarily dominating. This undertaking, if it exists, will not be resolved by an algorithm nor by an international treaty. It plays out, patiently, in the most elementary education—the one that teaches a child that the other is not a threat, but a possibility. Bibliography Elias, N. (1939). Peace is far more than the absence of conflict. It's the presence of restraint of power by law. It's the recognition, as enshrined in the @UN Charter, that force cannot be the final arbiter of whose lives, rights & future matter. The Pathology of Masculinity and Femininity Without Cultural Restraint Both sexes have evolutionary roles: men developed strength for protection, provision, and competition; women developed beauty and selectiveness for pair-bonding and survival. Culture channels these drives—family structure, dating norms, fatherhood, shame, religion—guiding strength toward building and beauty toward commitment. Remove the norms and the drives seek new avenues. For men, the open channel becomes force: aggression and risk can detach from responsibility, yielding robbery, assault, gang violence, and predation. The shadow side of masculinity is strength used to take rather than protect. For women, the channel shifts to extraction through simulated intimacy: monetized desire via platforms and influencer economies can turn closeness into leverage, often without the pair-bonding or family life it was built to support. The masculine ideal is protector and disciplined provider; its pathology is thug or criminal. The feminine ideal is nurturer and guardian of commitment; its pathology is the seller of simulated intimacy and extractor of attention. Both are corruptions of genuine virtues. Three accelerants intensified these patterns: stigma’s collapse, technology’s scalability of desire, and weakened communities and absent fathers. The root cause is the breakdown of family norms. Men are less destructive when bonded and mentored; women are less exploitative when raised to value enduring commitment. Consequences mirror each other: unchecked male pathology produces violence; unchecked female pathology produces mistrust, loneliness, and demographic decline. Both arise when culture denies that masculine and feminine virtues must be shaped and channeled rather than suppressed.

Contraception and Western Culture In the 1960s, the birth-control pill became widely available. Sexual liberation is usually presented as a story of freedom and progress, but its biological consequence is rarely discussed: sex could now be separated from reproduction. Every Western nation has experienced below-replacement fertility for decades. Oxford anthropologist J. D. Unwin anticipated this pattern in *Sex and Culture*, a study of 86 societies. He expected to disprove any link between sexual restraint and civilizational achievement. Instead, he concluded that cultures practicing strict monogamy generated energy expressed through art, science, conquest, and commerce. Relaxing sexual restraint, he argued, consistently weakened that energy within three generations. Unwin also predicted that such societies would abandon rationalism, deism, and monogamy. Three generations after 1960 brings us near the present, and some of his predictions appear increasingly visible. Religious affiliation has collapsed, marriage is declining, the median age at first marriage is at a record high, and a record share of people will never marry. Rationalism also appears to be giving way to egoism, identity, and emotion. Contraception helps explain this transformation. Evolutionary theory distinguishes between a behavior’s immediate purpose—such as pleasure—and its ultimate function, such as reproduction. Sex traditionally served both purposes. Contraception severed that connection, preserving the behavior while disconnecting it from reproduction. Female education, urbanization, workforce participation, economic growth, and the rising cost of living also correlate with declining fertility. Yet many of these changes depend on technological control over reproduction. Career-first lifestyles, extended education, and mass female workforce participation would be far more difficult without it. Women may have gained freedom from child-rearing, but they may have fewer daughters to inherit that freedom. Institutions that promoted this transformation now import replacement populations that may not share its values and could eventually reverse them.

Emma Woodhouse would probably try at once to decipher the personality of the woman in the portrait. Water Lilies — Claude Monet (1840–1926) Anne Elliot might see time, memory, and change in it. Mr. Darcy might appreciate precisely the calm and restraint of the image. The Starry Night — Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) Catherine Morland might turn the restless sky into the beginning of a mystery. Marianne Dashwood might notice the emotion first, and only then the landscape. These characters belong to the world of Jane Austen (1775–1817), while the paintings come from very different periods. Perhaps one interesting way to look at art is to ask not only: “What do I see?” but also: “What would someone else see in it?” #ArtHistory #FamousPaintings #LeonardoDaVinci #ClaudeMonet #VincentVanGogh #ArtAndLiterature #Museums #20260824 #0240 #MrCulturewise #CaptainWeb #English

How would Jane Austen’s (1775–1817) characters react to famous paintings? Mona Lisa — Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) Would Elizabeth Bennet be amused by all the interpretations built around the smile? Would Emma Woodhouse immediately try to “read” the personality of the woman in the portrait? Would Lady Catherine de Bourgh accept the mystery — or confidently explain what the expression really means? Water Lilies — Claude Monet (1840–1926) Would Mr. Darcy appreciate the quietness and restraint of the painting? Would Anne Elliot see something in it about time, memory, and things that change slowly? Would Marianne Dashwood simply be overwhelmed by the atmosphere? The Starry Night — Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) Would Elizabeth Bennet be drawn to the energy and freedom of the image? Would Catherine Morland turn the restless sky into the beginning of a Gothic mystery? Would Marianne Dashwood notice the beauty first — or the unease? Perhaps the way a character looks at a painting tells us as much about the character as it does about the artwork. #0183_Story_Eng #JaneAusten #PrideAndPrejudice #Emma #NorthangerAbbey #SenseAndSensibility #Persuasion #ArtAndLiterature #ArtHistory #ArthurWren #English

In Italy and France, far-right leaders like Meloni and Le Pen have toned down their euroskeptic language in recent years in the pursuit of power. In Romania, the Trump-aligned Simion is showing no such restraint https://t.co/rYQf79svYi #Euroskepticism #FarRight #PoliticalStrategy #IT #FR #RO

-------------------------- If I had to give a title to Christopher Nolan’s #Odyssey, it would be "The Sacking of Ithaca"... Imagine an ancient, fertile, and sacred garden. For thousands of years, people tended to it, drank from its pure springs, and nourished their minds with its fruits. This garden is Homer’s Odyssey, a place defined by balance, deep philosophy, the bittersweet ache of nostos (the longing for home), and the authentic soul of Greek culture. Suddenly, a powerful foreign conqueror appears at the gates of this garden. He arrives from a distant, glittering, yet spiritually hollow empire: Hollywood. At the helm is a highly skilled yet arrogant general, Christopher Nolan. This foreign civilization has no interest in understanding the wisdom of the garden. They simply want to colonize it and reshape it according to their own modern standards. The general marches in and begins his "work," distorting the land's most iconic figures to serve his own agenda. He takes Athena, the very symbol of divine wisdom, strategy, and restraint, and turns her into an ethereal being behind a pop-culture figure of Western media. He takes Helen of Troy, the ultimate, mythical personification of a beauty that launched a thousand ships, and completely detaches her from her historical and cultural roots. And as if that were not enough, he forces the character of Simon into the myth, that tiny nano-creature who feels completely alien to the Homeric universe, placed there merely to shock the audience and fill the frame. This foreign civilization strips away the soul and identity of the myth, keeping nothing but the names as a glossy wrapping paper to impress the masses. Today, Nolan’s film presents itself to the audience as a grand "gift", a visually spectacular, technologically flawless blockbuster in IMAX theaters that promises to honor the ancient epic. Yet, just as the Trojans threw open their gates to welcome the wooden horse, audiences today welcome this film with excitement. In reality, Nolan’s Odyssey is a modern-day Trojan Horse: a construct that hides within it the total distortion and conquest of Greek culture. Once the spotlight fades, all that remains is the pillage of the authentic Homeric identity, replaced by a commercialized Western culture! #Οδύσσεια #Νόλαν #ΕλληνικόςΠολιτισμός

Matteo Ramon Arevalos is a virtuoso Italian pianist, contemporary composer, and multidisciplinary sound artist whose work bridges the gap between traditional classical refinement and radical avant-garde experimentation. Known for his profound mastery of the piano, both in its standard form and as a meticulously “prepared” instrument, Arevalos constructs evocative sonic landscapes that blend historical reverence with cinematic depth, minimalist restraint, and structural innovation. https://tunitemusic.com/artists/matteo-ramon-arevalos/
